Towards concerted sharing in the Jordan River Basin
The Regional Project “Towards concerted sharing: development of a regional water economy model in the Jordan River Basin” held its kick-off meeting from 11 to February 12, 2013, at the Days Inn Hotel in Amman. The regional project is an agreement between SOW-VU and the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency, the principal sponsor of the project. The kick-off enjoyed the company of representatives of all its participating institutes: American University of Beirut (AUB), Jordan University of Science and Technology (JUST), Al-Quds University (AQU) and Arab Center for the Studies of Arid Zones and Dry Lands (ACSAD).
The meeting started with keynote speeches from the project leader Professor Keyzer (SOW-VU) and His Excellency Mohamad El Najar, former minister of Water and Irrigation in Jordan. During the first day, institutes presented thematic research items that are of interest for the project. Break-out sessions were organized to discuss the formats for data exchange as well as joint research interests that should foster collaboration between the institutes at a later stage of the project. During the second day, the framework of the Regional Water Economy model was presented as well as the principal steps for its development. Furthermore, presentations of policy makers from Jordan, Palestinian Territories and Lebanon about current local and regional water problems provided useful information to focus the project on its intended objectives.
In the coming months contracts will be signed by the project partners and a first phase of data compilation, data processing and model design will start.
